I played this while I was adding you to my blog roll and was wondering why it surprised you and then I heard the beginning and I think I understood. I love the Carpenters! There a a bunch of Youtubes of her (sound only) singing with very, very minimal instrumentation - beautiful. I wish the recordings were available to download or on CD.

It's a pretty awesome song. I remember it when it first came out, and I liked it then. Now that I understand it better, it's even more awesome.
