Hi Jay; As I recall, it is in reference to a very cold night and needing the extra warmth But, then... it wouldn't surprise me that there is another story. You know how musicians are. :)
You would be correct, at least in my understanding. It is allegedly Australian, and shepherds and others who slept out would bundle themselves up the dogs - a three dog night was cold indeed!
