When does one arrive at adulthood?

  Tonight, I'm watching a 20/20 story on ABC television of a woman, a Ms. Colleps  who had sex with five 18 year-olds.  She was sentenced to 5 years in prison.  Why?  Well, mostly because she was a highschool teacher and these were students.

  I'm not saying it was right, so don't throw things at me.

  What I'd like to ask, though, is that we compare thsese 18 year old "victims" to the many "surprise, you're an adult" kids who are sentenced as adults as young as 11.

  I remember the day I was officially an adult.  I was never a great one for birthdays.  They weren't always so happy for me as a kid, and as an adult I ignore them.  Just another day.  But, the day I was no longer a kid, officially.... it was huge for me if for no-one else.  I didn't feel so much as an adult, but I was glad I was now free to be one.
  Now we steal not only our children's childhood, but their day of majority.  We tell them that the state will decide when they are an adult, and will move that target at a whim.

  Well, I'm not trying to make any world-class points, just to say that we have a really weird ass culture.

Hello Randy
Another example of the hypocrisy of 'the state' towards young people, and the inherent idiocy of 'one size fits all' age restriction laws. This kind of thing happens in the UK, too, the tabloid press is full of stories of 'feral youth' who they advocate being flogged for the slightest infraction, often just youthful high spirits gone slightly out of hand, but as soon as the slightest shadow of anything sexual enters the picture, the same young people suddenly become clueless, innocent 'victims', as pure as the driven snow, being abused and corrupted by 'paedophiles'. It's all nonsense, and bloody irritating nonsense, at that.

Hallo Randy,
Hallo Sammy,

I want to set a point to it.
Many states train (drill, educate) young people to soldiers who are not yet 18 years old. The state therefore trains children to kill - is not that a crime? I would say incitement to murder!
Just my meaning.

Hello Randy
Just an afterthought which occurred to me this afternoon - had the teacher having sex with 18 year old male students been male himself, what are the odds that the sentence would have been at least double that given to the female teacher?

Hi Sammy;
The consequences for the same crime do differ greatly depending on the gender of the accused. I was so sad to see a boy of 14 given life for killing his grandfather - no reason, just got his grandfathers gun and shot him one morning, then went into the kitchen and told his grandmother what he'd done, sat down and cried.
Surely that's a mental health issue, right?
Compare that to a recent story of a young lady near or adult age who shot her boyfriend, no reason known, then tried to hide the crime. She got 10 years.
My problem with our country here is that the prosecutor has far too much power, is motivated by politics, and has few consequences ... but further, we seem to have lost the moral compass here - and the religious are not helping us be better humans - while the politicians lead from the back, carp and bite eachother while raking in special interest monies for quite questionable requests. I'm so tired of it all.

Hi Nikki;

Somehow the state has decided that anything it does is right, no consequences, no rationale, no consistency, no questioning allowed. Good thing I live in a "democracy", huh.

Randy I love you, but your too generous...there is no crime here. These boys were old enough to know what their bodies wanted. They were old enough to know both mentally and emotionally what they wanted...sex! look most of us at 18 have sex and may or not be prepared for the emotional or mental feedback..so it is not like her being a teacher changes that. No, it is simply growing older and wiser that changes that.

The fact is the human body is designed to want pleasure and sex is VERY pleasurable..ask those that have it.

I agree with your points about while these young adults are "victims" 11 year olds are being charged as adults.

I guess what angers me most...I was being used sexually at about roughly age 4. By the time I was five years old I had already had more than one penis in side me. I had tasted semen..and yet had not developed anger..

So in my mind, right or wrong..a child below the ability to understand, is a victim...a young person who is developed, of an age where the body has hormones to drive them, where they them selves want it more than "they are doing it just to please an adult" is not a victim...but getting their wishes fulfilled...and most first times are rather unremarkable for horny young males..but the advantage is they can repeat themselves right away.

So Understand I do not think the 14, 15, 17, ect year old who goes looking and wants sex is a "molestation victim, an abused child", that cheapens the meaning of the words.

What strikes me is the way our current society deals with this issue. I read constantly of 14, 15 16 17 year old boys who get caught in a guy's car and the guy gets hung...but the boy agreed to meet them, in cases started the exchange, looked for a male who would give them sex...(look even with my past if a guy had offered me a blow job when I was 15 or 16 I would have loved it, jumped at it...) but these are in no way victims...me as a five year old being undressed ( granted I never said no, or spoke up..a bunny doesn't do that} then placed on a chair, being held and kissed, rubbed ( I don't even remember if the first time was with any lube ) and then held tightly while his penis was pushed into me..I did not feel a victim then, I did not feel wrong..I was doing as I was told, making some one happy and being told I was a good boy. That is the difference and if people can't see it then we really went off the rails and jumped the tracks some where.

My most wonderful friend, I realize I got rather wound up here. I may have written more than you want on your blog. Please know you can delete this with my permission should you wish to. I just get so dang angry at the idea that young people have no emotions, no desires until they reach a mystical magical age, when those who preach this know what they felt and did at that same young age...I live in trailer park where most of the people married when the wife was 15 or less...yet they talk smack about kids wanting sex...get real dudes and look at your own long 70- 80 year life...you wanted it at that age also.

OK calming down, I have to go make spaghetti sauce for everyone's supper...hugs and loves.

Hi Scottie;
You should be angry about this. I am.
I'm angry that the state has decided to criminalize so much. There's a blog I love called http://thelegalwatchdog.blogspot.com/ and he talks about the quirky nature of the prosecutors, the way that it takes so little to be strung up in America lately. It's frightening and idiotic.
But, all that aside, your comment is golden and you have an open door to voice your feelings and thoughts here anytime for any length.

hugs!
